Cast Care
Information Tips
-
Keep the cast
clean and dry.
-
Check for cracks
or breaks in the cast.
-
Rough edges can
be padded to protect the skin from scratches or
abrasion.
-
Do not scratch
the skin under the case by inserting objects inside
the cast.
-
You can use a
hair dryer on a cool setting to blow air into the
cast and cool down hot, itchy skin. Never blow
warm or hot air into the cast.
-
Do not put
powders or lotions inside the cast.
-
Cover the cast
while your child is eating to prevent food spills
and crumbs from entering the cast.
-
Elevate the cast
above the level of the heart to decrease swelling.
-
Encourage your
child to move his or her fingers (or toes for a leg
cast) to promote circulation and exercise the
muscles.

Cast Cover Care Instructions
Each
cast cover has a sewn-in label with care instructions.
To keep the brightness and softness of the fabric,
follow these simple instructions:
Our
Covers Aren't Waterproof
Plaster casts need to stay dry. A wet cast can lead to
irritation and infection of your child’s skin. Although
our cast covers are not designed to waterproof the cast,
they can be used as the first layer of protection. Use a
Cast of Characters’ cast cover over your child’s cast
and then add a plastic bag (grocery bag) over the top.
Use a rubber band to close the bag over the arm, taking
care not to bind the arm too tightly. You must still use
care when bathing your child. Have your child keep their
arm out of the water and assist your child with
shampooing and rinsing.
